Getting to the bottom of the top health issues for men

Men’s Health Month

Health Issues for Men: IBI Healthcare aims to raise awareness about pertinent health concerns for men. Our previous blog emphasized the disparity between individuals in terms of seeking regular check-ups and preventive measures. These routines play a critical role in identifying and treating potential health issues early on.

Top Causes

While heart disease and cancer rank as the top two causes of death among men, there are other potential health issues to which men should pay close attention, such as diabetes. In addition to being the seventh-leading cause of death in 2013, diabetes is the leading cause of both kidney failure and adult blindness. Nearly 30 million Americans currently suffer from diabetes, and another staggering 86 million have what doctors term pre-diabetes. Pre-diabetes is a condition that left untreated, could lead to type 2 diabetes and other serious diseases. Men with diabetes outnumber women by approximately two million. Given that as many as 90% of those with pre-diabetes are unaware of their condition, it stands to reason that men who don’t overcome their reluctance to visit their doctor are much more likely to become diabetic.

Delay or Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

For individuals with pre-diabetes, there are effective strategies available to delay or prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. While factors like race, ethnicity, and family history contribute to the risk, obesity and physical inactivity are significant influencers. Making lifestyle adjustments such as weight loss and increased exercise can have a beneficial effect on blood sugar levels and decrease the chances of developing diabetes.

The CDC offer helpful resources for individuals interested in learning more about diabetes and how to control it. If you are concerned about your weight, we encourage you to consult with the experts at IBI Healthcare. They can provide guidance and address any potential health issues, such as diabetes.
