Physical Fitness: Get Active! The Importance and Benefits

Get Active! The Importance of Physical Fitness

The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition focuses on encouraging Americans to become healthier through physical activity and better nutrition. IBI Healthcare Institute is pleased to help spread the message to increase awareness of the need for physical activity.

Find Time for Physical Activity

One of the most important ways we can take care of our bodies is to find time to get adequate physical activity. Along with losing excess weight, doctors advise that consistent exercise is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of high blood pressure type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Physical activity has even been shown to be a deterrent against some forms of cancer. For those who have recently undergone weight loss surgery, getting enough exercise, combined with a healthier diet can be the best way to maintain a healthy weight. In other words, a regular regime of exercise is essential to helping you live a longer, healthier life.

Ideally, if you are an adult, you should aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. The “Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults:

  • Aim for 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. Moderate activity includes things like walking fast, dancing, swimming, and raking leaves.

  • Do muscle-strengthening activities – like lifting weights or using exercise bands – at least 2 days a week.”

We Can Do Better

Regrettably, many of us don’t get enough exercise. In Georgia, only 20% of adults meet the recommended physical activity levels, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control. This percentage is similar to the national average and better than several Southern states. However, there’s room for improvement!

Remember that physical fitness is for everyone. Additionally, no matter what shape you are in, you can find activities that work for you. Our next post will provide you with ideas on how to fit the right amount of physical activity into your busy schedule.
