June marks the 23rd National Men’s Health Month, an occasion designed to help raise awareness of health issues of specific importance to men and boys. Affiliated with a Congressional health program, the objective of Men’s Health Month is to “heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys,” according to the Men’s Health Network. The program focuses on giving health care providers, public policy makers, media and private citizens a platform to advocate regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury among men and boys.
Why the emphasis on men? For starters, women still tend to outlive men. As recently as 2010, there were fewer than 90 men for every 100 women aged 65-69. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease and cancer ranked as the top two causes of death among men of all ages in 2014, with diabetes ranked number six. Men are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than women.
Yet, according to the CDC, women are 100% more likely to visit their doctor for annual exams and preventive procedures. From blood pressure and cholesterol, to glucose levels and prostate health, experts agree that regular health checkups are the key to early detection and prevention of serious health problems.
Maintaining a healthy weight is also key to warding off high blood pressure, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Eating healthy and staying physically active are two of the best ways to avoid excess pounds that could cause health problems.
