What is a Laparoscopic Fundoplication and Hiatal Hernia Repair?
Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication is now considered the standard surgical approach for treatment of severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
In laparoscopic (keyhole) fundoplication, a new “valve” is constructed as the upper portion of the stomach (fundus) is wrapped around the lower end of the esophagus. The wrap is intended to support the sphincter muscle so that it will open only when it is supposed to and not allow stomach acid to push its way up into the esophagus. The procedure consists of repairing the hiatal hernia then tightening diaphragm opening with stitches or a mesh. Then the upper part of the stomach is wrapped around the end of the esophagus to prevent stomach acid and/or food from protruding into the esophagus.
