Dr. Okera Hanshaw is a native of Oxford, MS. The son of two college professors, he matriculated Cum Laude at Morehouse College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He next attended the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, MI, where he received his Doctorate in Medicine (M.D.)
Following a General Surgery internship at Wayne State University – Detroit Medical Center, Dr. Hanshaw completed residency training in Anesthesiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. Having served as Chief of Anesthesia at Piedmont Rockdale Hospital, he is now the CEO of Hypnos Anesthesia, LLC, and a practicing Board-Certified Anesthesiologist in Atlanta. Dr. Hanshaw excels at various types of anesthesia delivery, including general, sedation, and regional techniques utilizing ultrasonography. At Georgia Surgicare, Dr. Hanshaw serves a dual function as both a Supervising Anesthesiologist and Chief Quality Officer, focusing on improvement of quality metrics and maintenance of high-quality patient care.
Outside of work, Dr. Hanshaw continues to provide leadership, mentorship and philanthropy in the community. He is Co-Founder of the City of Decatur Black Parent Alliance, President of the Clarke Hill Homeowners Association, and Treasurer of the Thomas J. Blocker Society, a division of the Morehouse College Health Careers Program. Dr. Hanshaw is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends, mentoring those interested in careers in Anesthesia, watching sports, and playing golf.
