GI Motility Study (Esophageal Manometry)

What is a GI motility study?

GI motility is tested using esophageal manometry, which measures intraluminal pressures and coordination of pressure activity of the muscles of the esophagus, and is used to diagnose motility disorders of the esophagus.

How is the GI motility study performed?

A thin flexible plastic tube is passed through the nostril, down the back of the throat, and into the esophagus as you swallow. With further swallowing, the tube is passed down into the stomach.You will then be asked to swallow to capture the pressure readings for the contractions in the esophagus.

How long does the GI motility study take?

The whole procedure is completed in about 45 minutes.

When will I see results?

Once the test results are analyzed on the computer the physician will set up a follow-up appointment with you to discuss the results with you.

What are the risks of a GI motility study?
