Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band (LAGB)

What is Lap-Band?

The Lap-Band is a surgery that helps with weight loss. A band is placed on the upper part of the stomach to create a small pouch to hold food. The restriction reduces the amount of food that can be eaten in a single meal and produces a feeling of fullness that lasts between meals.

Who is a candidate?

The Lap-Band is a great option for patients who are obese (BMI > 30). The procedure can help obese patients with (or help prevent) diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or triglycerides, obstructive sleep apnea, and heart disease or stroke.

How much does the procedure cost?

Self pay price: approximately $9000-13,000. The cost not only includes the price of the product, but more importantly, the skill and expertise of the specialist or healthcare professional that is doing the procedure. Look for someone who is licensed and trained and has experience treating patients using this procedure. Enroll in the SurgiCare Rewards Program to save money on treatments.

When will I start seeing results? How long will those results last?

As with any other weight loss procedure, behavior modification and dietary compliance are the key players in determining the long-term success of the procedure. Basically, it comes down to how committed the patient is to losing the extra weight.

Are there any risks associated with Lap-Band?

Lap-Band has one of the lowest peri-operative risks amongst laparoscopic weight loss operations. However, some risks involved include bleeding (< 1%), band system leak (rare), cuff prolapsed, cuff erosion, esophageal dilation, and eventual explanation (> 25%).
